The role of oral English teaching is becoming more and more important,which plays an important role in cultivating students' practical application of language ability and communicative competence.In oral English class,the traditional way of assessment can not meet the cultivation of students' oral ability.Therefore,the application of performance assessment in college oral English class becomes more and more important.Performance assessment includes self-evaluation,peer-evaluation,and teacher-evaluation.Different from traditional assessment,performance assessment emphasizes on the creation of real-life situations for students to observe the abilities of students to use language,as well as to cultivate their knowledge and emotional attitudes.In recent years,the number of domestic and foreign research on performance assessment is increasing,but the number of using performance assessment on foreign language classroom;especially on oral class research is still relatively limited.This study attempts to explore the impact of performance assessment on college students' oral learning and to analyze the factors that affect college students' oral expressions.The research method of this study is the combination of qualitative research and quantitative research.The tools are two sets of tests,classroom observation and two sets of questionnaires.The obtained data complete and verify each other to improve the credibility of the study.In this study,47 students from non-English majors in a university are selected as the research subjects,and an empirical study on oral English teaching is conducted in the college oral English class.As the oral English class is conducted once every two weeks,the actual teaching time is six weeks.In the first and last lessons,students are tested twice by pre-test and post-test,and they are required to answer two questionnaires.Through the pre-test and post-test,the comparison between two sets of questionnaires and classroom observation,the conclusions are drawn.The results show that the performance assessment(1)improves self-confidence of students in speaking English,(2)stimulates students' motivation in learning English,(3)promotes students' interest in English,(4)and makes students realize the importance of self-evaluation,peer-evaluation,and teacher's evaluation.It can be seen that the performance assessment has positive effects on the oral English learning of college student.It should be admitted that the study still bears the following limitations.(1)Due to the limited time of the experiment,the changes of the emotions and attitudes of the students to English is needed to be seen in the long-term study.(2)Due to the limited research objects,the impact of performance assessment on college oral English learning still needs to be further validated in more studies.(3)As students cannot concentrate in the classroom activities all the time,how to improve students' concentration still needs to be further studied.
