168 Hours:You Have More Time Than You Think, part of which was taken as my translating material,is a non-literary work.In this book, the author makes use of different figures of speech, and one frequently-used of them is metaphor.Because of differences between Chinese and English languages and cultures,.it is hard to translate metaphors. Therefore,I made a research on the strategies of translating metaphors.Based on the researches done by scholars home and abroad, three kinds of strategies of translating metaphors were summarized, namely preserving the image, distorting the image and removing the image. Then metaphors in the translating material were analyzed to find out the applicability of each strategy. Finally, the conclusion was drawn that the strategy of preserving the image is the best choice, and compared with the strategy of removing the image, the strategy of distorting the image is a better choice. When a metaphor can be reproduced with target language, the translator is supposed to take the strategy of preserving the image;when a metaphor can not be reproduced with the target language because of lingual and cultural differences, the translator is expected to take the strategy of distorting the image;when both two strategies above are not applicable, the translator can take the strategy of removing the image.
