The Application Of Fuzzy Language In Literary Translation

As an inherent characteristic of language, fuzziness refers to indeterminacy of natural language. Due to the limitation of human beings'brain, language used to depict the objective world is bound to be fuzzy. Particularly, the fuzziness of meaning is identified when people are uncertain of the membership of some borderland cases for a semantic category. With this uncertainty, a semantic category fails to have its boundary clearly distinguished from another, and as a result, its meaning cannot be precisely defined. And translation, especially literary translation, as a complex inter-lingual act unavoidably bears fuzziness.The appearance of fuzziness in actual language utterance is known as fuzzy language. In this thesis, the emphasis is mainly put on the application of fuzzy language in literary translation. The present writer tries to classify fuzziness of literary translation as ontological fuzziness, epistemological fuzziness and methodological fuzziness, etc. Besides, the present writer analyzes the translation of fuzzy language in literary translation from context theory and functional equivalence and provides some translating strategies on the basis of the relationship between linguistic fuzziness and precision.Fuzziness goes through literary translation, and the translation of literary works cannot be achieved without the use of fuzzy language. However, fuzziness is only one of the main characteristics of the development of translation theory. Precision, as the opposite of fuzziness, cannot be ignored, because fuzziness and precision is a dialectical unity. They are complementary to each other, and can be transformed with each other.At last, the present writer points out that although fuzziness exists in the translation of literary works, excessive fuzziness can lead to misunderstanding and inaccuracy in translation. Thus, fuzziness has a degree. Fuzziness brings to theorists a new perspective to study translatology and helps the translators to promote their versions of literary works.
