A Study Of The Importance And Effectiveness Of A Conductor In Chinese Chamber Music

Chinese chamber music is a developing genre in the Chinese music scene, it has been named very differently in various countries. In this thesis, I have categorize Chinese chamber music into 2 categories namely the traditional Chinese chamber music and the contemporary Chinese chamber music. Since ages ago, the traditional Chinese chamber music is led solely by the musicians themselves, while contemporary Chinese chamber music developed tremendously and rapidly during the 20th century,which sees the many involvements of the conductors. As a conductor myself, I would like to take this opportunity to study the importance and role of the conductor in the Chinese chamber ensemble setting. In the first chapter, I gave a brief introduction of Chinese chamber in the current situation. While in the second chapter, I do categorization to Chinese chamber music, and especially in Chinese contemporary music a conductor is needed to give aid to the musicians.Third chapter sees the role of a conductor on stage and down stage during rehearsal,giving insights of what a conductor can assist the musicians, and the effectiveness of what a conductor can achieve. Forth chapter is a topic on how a conductor should"control" or "free" the musicians in conducting and this is a point that differentiate between an orchestra and chamber ensemble conductor.And in the last chapter,I did an analysis on the conductor's rehearsal techniques between rehearsing for a chamber ensemble and an orchestra. In having the opportunity to work on this thesis, I sincerely hope that my finding and research will be of a contribution and help to the development of Chinese chamber music scene.
