Translation Practice Report On Latvia Criminal Law

The translation material of the thesis is from Latvia Criminal Law,with more than 60,000 words.Legal English translation is one of the most difficult translations in the field of applied English translation.English legal texts always employ long sentences with complex structures,confusing legal terms as well as a lot of old English and Latin words.Law itself is very strict,and English legal texts may not be translated with a little negligence.In the process of translation,because there are a lot of words in the target language with similar but not exactly the same meanings in corresponding source words,it becomes the maximum difficulty on how to choose a proper word in target language to best match corresponding source language words in meaning,collocation and grammar.In view of the above statement,this thesis is aimed to explore the solution to the problem of choosing and translating near synonyms in the legal field,and then confirm the translation strategies and methods of English legal texts.The translation practice report includes the translation task description,translation preparation,translation process,analysis of the original text,case analysis and translation methods summarized through practice and so on.In terms of word translation,there are two methods including domestication and foreignization.With regards to long sentences with difficulty in translation,the translation methods adopted include syntactic linearity,reconstruction,and division.In addition,this thesis analyzes the translation of legal terms,and puts forward some translation solutions for reference.In summary,the main achievement of this translation practice report is to explore the translation methods of legal provisions from the perspective of semantics,collocation and grammar,so as to provide specific reference value for the translation of legal synonyms.
