A Report On The Chinese To English Translation Of The Cohesive Devices Amendments To SOLAS Adopted By MSC96

Based on Halliday and Hasan' s theory of cohesion,the report categorizes the cohesive devices of the Amendments to SOLAS adopted by MSC96,and conducts a comparative study of cohesive devices between English and Chinese in an attempt to explore the effective translation strategies in the translation of maritime documents taking into consideration of the characteristics of the two languages and the different expressions according to the five types of cohesive devicesnamely,reference,substitution,ellipsis,conjunction and lexical cohesion.It is found that the translation of the cohesive devices in maritime documents is directly related to the quality of the translated text and plays an important role in the understanding of the source text and i restructuring the target language.Therefore,the translator should carefully select the appropriate translation strategy of cohesive devices according to the textual features of maritime documnets.By analyzing and summarizing the cohesive devices in maritime documnets,the author hopes to provide references for the translation practice of maritime documnets in the future.
