In recent years, text linguistics has been developing rapidly while some translation theorists have been enthusiastic in introducing the results of text linguistics into the study of translation, making the research of translation into the textual level. As an important component of text, cohesive devices have been a greater interest to the translation theorists. Because there are respective cohesive devices in different languages, to gain a natural translation a translator must avoid using the cohesive devices of the original text mechanically. Instead, he should apply the cohesive devices that are consistent with the usage of the target language. Therefore, it’s necessary for a translator to pay attention to the comparison of cohesive devices in two different languages and their influence in translation. The fact is that English and Chinese share a lot in common with each other in the employment of some certain types of cohesive devices. However, the disparity in cohesive devices between the two languages can’t be ignored. When translating from English to Chinese or from Chinese to English, a translator may have to apply different devices to adapt to the target language, which is an inevitable difficult issue in English-Chinese translation. This thesis is a report based on the translation of the first two chapters of Maritime Security:International Law and Policy Perspectives from Australia and New Zealand. It is made up of four parts, including an introduction to the translation task, the translation process, cases analysis and the final conclusion among which the cases analysis is the main body, exploring the strategy for the translation of cohesive devices in maritime documents by analyzing the reference and conjunction devices. In reference, it mainly discusses the approach to personal reference and demonstrative reference in English-Chinese translation. In conjunction, it mainly discusses from the perspective of free translation.
