Linguistic-oriented Western traditional translation theories attach great importance to the source text which was regarded as the center in the translation, while the status of the translator was subordinate to that of its author. The translator's subjectivity had long been ignored.Since the turn of translation studies in the 1970's,more attentions have been paid to the translator's subjectivity.Skopos theory has provided a theoretical basis for the study of translator's subjectivity. So far the study of translator's subjectivity from Skopos theory is relatively insufficient.According to the Skopos Theory, translation is a purposeful activity on the basis of the source text. The purpose of translation controls the overall translation action, from choice of translation strategies to the choice of words, which indicates that translation purpose greatly determines the display of translator's subjectivity. This thesis attempts to study translator's subjectivity from the Skopos Theory based on Lin Yutang's translation of Fu Sheng Liu Ji with an aim to understand specifically how a translator's subjectivity is exercised to achieve success in his translation.Lin's translation of Fu Sheng Liu Ji,widely accepted in the west, must be a good example to show the full play of the translator's subjectivity. So this thesis, based on an analysis of Skopos Theory and translator's subjectivity, makes a tentative study of Lin's subjectivity from his choice of the source texts, translation strategies and methods under the guidance of his purpose.Through this study, the author has come to the following conclusions.Firstly, the translation process is the process translators display their subjectivity.Secondly, target readers and source texts put restrictions on the exercise of translator's subjectivity. Finally, the translator's passivity can be minimized as long as the translator has prepared a clear translation purpose, bringing a comparatively good integration of the components of translator's subjectivity.
