This paper is a report on English-to-Chinese translation. The task is selected from The Mayo Clinic Breast Cancer Book published by the Mayo Clinic,a well-known clinic in America. It consists of twenty-four chapters, and the translator selects Chapter Four and Chapter Five as translation task with about 11,000 words. In Chapter Four,it introduces the basic information of the breast cancer. And in Chapter Five,it describes whether the breast cancer is hereditary or not.The reasons why the translator chooses this book are those: Firstly, the translator is interested in the breast cancer.Secondly, this book is a scientific and technological text, which can enrich people's knowledge.Thirdly, this book has not been translated into Chinese before, this translation practice is a good try. This thesis includes four parts: task description, translation process, case analyses and summary. The first part mainly introduces the translation task and the Mayo Clinic.Part two is about the whole process of translation. In this part, the translator describes preparations, revisions and difficulties in the translation process in detail. In part three, the paper analyzes the application of communicative translation put forward by Peter Newmark in the text.Because there are a lot of professional medical terminologies and abbreviations, the translator turns to translation tools and other related information in order to understand the meaning of each word and translate them.It can make sure that the content is more easily understood by readers. When the passive sentences are translated, the translator tries to conform to the expression habits of Chinese. When it comes to the attributive clauses, the translator pays more attention to the position of the clauses.About the translation of the long sentences, the translator finds the central part at first, distinguishes the internal logic of the sentences and translates them at last.In the last part, the translator summarizes the experience of this translation practice and accumulates experience for future work.Although this is a medical book, its content is not so obscure as medical monographs. It aims to popularize knowledge related to breast cancer. In other words, the material has a wide audience,so more attention should be paid to readers' feelings in translation. Therefore, the communicative translation theory offers guidance to this thesis. The translator uses the strategies of free translation and recasting translation.
