This report mainly discusses the problems and corresponding solutions in the translation process of the narrative Genetic Testing Stories. The source texts include a number of genetic testing experiences narrated by patients who suffer from genetic diseases, and they mainly adopt the narrative writing form.Through translating these stories, this translator hopes to bring the genetic diseases to the public attention,to provide useful information about genetic diseases and the development of genetic testing. The report is mainly based on the Newmark' s Communicative Translation Theory.According to Newmark, the main functions of language texts can be divided into three kinds: expressive, informative and vocative. The main purpose of the source texts is to bring genetic testing into focus. Therefore,it can be classified as vocative. There are also some medical explanations, which can be defined as informative. In Newmark's view, both these two functions can be served in translation by the communicative translation strategies. So,the Communicative Translation Theory is very instrumental to this translation project.Under this theoretical guidance, the translator analyzed the source texts and discussed the translation methods from the perspectives of the lexical as well as the syntactic levels. On the lexical level, the translator used such translating methods as abbreviation, annotation and conversion, while on the syntactic level, the translator adopted methods like division, addition and reconstruction. The first chapter of the report introduces this translation project, including the background information of the source texts and the project's significance. The second chapter is a brief introduction to the guiding theory — the Communicative Translation Theory(CTT).The third chapter mainly analyzes the lexical and syntactic features of the source texts based on the CTT.The fourth chapter is the main part of the whole report, which presents specific cases and analyses. The final chapter is the conclusion of this report.
