Although Marx never clearly defined the concept of matter, but we can find the true meaning of the matter from his development process of philosophy thought and the construction of system of philosophy. This article reveals the rich connotation of the matter from the perspective of Marx's historical materialism.Besides,it highlights that the concept of matter of Marx's view has obvious superiority and the guidance of the contemporary value by contrasting and analysing traditional matter and western Marxist matter.First of all,it is found that the traditional philosophy textbooks are based on the Soviet philosophy textbook system by retrospecting historical origin of the traditional material concept in the textbooks. Therefore the concept of matter in the Soviet textbook is affected by the domestic political centralization and the planned economy. It also has positive significance to some extent, but stick to the abstract dogma of "unification in matter of the world".The essence and the standpoint of Marxist are not fundamentally grasped.so there is some limitations.Second, the connotation of matter we talked is based on the view of historical materialism. This is also the key part of this article.Through defining the concept of matter on the horizon, clarifying Marx' position, confirming that "matter" is not abstract matter but specific one,we emphasize that Marx's investigation is for the purpose of criticizing fetishism and capitalist society. We analyze the concrete matter and discuss the inner link among them under the capitalist mode of production is this paper that is to build the theoretical framework of this chapter, and drive connotation of the concept of matter more fullness. While the concept of Marx's matter is the key to grasp the historical materialism of four dimensions: practicality, historicity, reality and criticism. This also is essential distinction between the matter of Marx's from historical materialism and all thegeneral material concept.Again,we analyse the matter thoughts of western Marxist scholars.I choose the matter thoughts of Lukacs,Gramsci and Schmidt to analyse because what I think they are more representative.Lukacs saw Marx'attention to society, and strengthen the social concept in two of his works resulting in his disregard for the "nature" as well.He also has insight into Marx'sthoughts of practice and totality, but ignores the materialization on the relations of production of capitalism.Gramsci's view of practical ontology breaks through the traditional matter concept that highlights the characteristic of matter' existence, and emphasizes human subjective practice. But he excessively emphasis on the faith and consciousness of the proletariat, and doesn't observe the practice of matter, which is far from Marx's grasp on the matter of concreteness and reality at the same time.Schmidt' material view with social practice as the intermediary is inspired by Marx.He inherited Marx's standpoint on material concreteness and practice to a certain degree.Compared with social relations and the material itself,he is more focused on the natural matter itself, and the understanding of the natural and social attribute of matter is different from Marx' ones.On the one hand, western Marxist inherited Marx's matter view to some extent,on the other hand it failed to overcome their own theoretical defects. Finally,we research the concept of matter from a perspective of historical materialism and view realistic society's development in contemporary China, which is a certain enlightening significance to socialist construction and the development of market economy and the advance of spiritual civilizationconstruction in our country. The Chinese communist party insists on combining the primary principles of Marxism with the realistic national conditions of China and explore a modern path of the socialism with Chinese characteristics which is different form the traditional modernization.
