ObjectivesTo investigate the present situation as well as the influencing factors of nursing professional commitment among undergraduate male nursing students,and to explore the correlation between professional commitment,general self-efficacy,perceived social support and personality through qualitative research;Then through quantitative research get an in-depth understanding of male nursing students’ experiences during professional commitment formation process and analysis male nursing students’ professional commitment formation from a novel perspective.The aim is to provide theoretical basis for higher nursing educators and clinical nursing management to recruit and remain male nursing students.MethodsQuantitative and qualitative researches were used in the research of the status and influencing factors of the professional commitment among undergraduate male students.1 The first part was quantitative research.290 male nursing students from five baccalaureate nursing colleges were asked to participate in a questionnaire study on professional commitment of male nursing students by using the convenience sampling method from October 2015 to May 2016.The questionnaire include general information questionnaire,Nursing Professional Commitment Scale,General Self Efficacy Scale,Perceived Social Support Scale,Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised,Short Scale for Chinese.The data was inputted by EpiData3.1 to establish the database and SPSS22.0 was applied to conduct the statistical analysis.Means and standard deviations were presented for continuous variables,while frequency and percentage were used for categorical variables.The comparison of differences of variables within groups was used to the t-test,ANOVA.The correlation analysis using Pearson correlation analysis.The multivariate analysis was adopted by multiple regression analysis.2 The second part was qualitative research.A semi-structured interview was carried out on the basis of a manual containing five questions in total from October to December in 2015.The questions referred to the reason choose nursing major,change in male nursing students’ perceptions of nursing,families’,relatives’ and friends’ perceptions of male nurse,the advantage and pressure to be a male nursing student,career planning.Interviews were accessed by purpose sampling.These interviews were evaluated by the phenomenological method.Fourteen male nursing students were interviewed until the categories and codes were saturated.Guided by Colazzi’s methodology,data consolidation and analysis was performed.Results1 The scores of nursing professional commitment among undergraduate male students were showed as follows.The average score of nursing professional commitment was 3.08±0.60,at the moderate level.The score of Willingness to Make an Effort(2.63±0.78)was the lowest of all,next was the Belief in Goal and Value(3.27±0.75).The score of Maintaining Membership was the highest(3.44±0.75).2 The results of univariate analysis showed that,different reason of choosing nursing(F=4.421,P=0.001),the attitude of learning(F=35.355,P<0.001),perspective on courses offered(F=8.242,P<0.001),the attitude to nursing of college(F=5.431,P<0.001),the attitude to nursing of other medical majors(F=3.376,P=0.010)the attitude to male nurses of patients(F=9.832,P<0.001),the relationship between nurses and patients(F=10.809,P<0.001),the views of the policy of recruit higher education nurses(F=2.537,P=0.040)has different level of professional commitment among undergraduate male nursing students.The further study of multiple regression analysis pointed that the reason of choosing nursing,attitude of learning,general self-efficacy,relationship between nursing and patients,perspective on courses offered,perceived social support were the main influencing factors of professional commitment among undergraduate male nursing students.3 Results of correlation analysis of professional commitment and Extraversion is r=0.188,P<0.001,so there is a positive correlation;There had a positive correlation between professional commitment and general self-efficacy(r=0.324,P<0.001);There had a positive correlation between professional commitment and perceived social support(r=0.354,P<0.001).4 The formation of professional commitment is a complex process among undergraduate male students.Major selection experience,learning experience,professional perspective change experience and other factors affect the formation of their professional commitment.The experience of the professional commitment formation among undergraduate male students were unideal profession,gender-based pressureand advantage,instable professional thought,the dilemma of career planning.Conclusions1 The positive of the professional commitment among undergraduate male students is a moderate status,it shows that there is a low degree of professional recognition.It is outstanding in terms of willingness to make an effort.2 The professional commitment in undergraduate male students influenced by various factors,among these factors,the reason of choosing nursing,attitude of learning,general self-efficacy,relationship between nursing and patients,perspective on courses offered,perceived social support are the main factors of the professional commitment among undergraduate male students.3 The experience of the professional commitment formation among undergraduate male students were unideal profession,gender-based pressure and advantage,instable professional thought,the dilemma of career planning. |
