Jonathan Hughes' Green Productivity Development Theories

This article probes into the green productivity development theory of Jonathan Hughes, the representative figure of ecological Marxism , and it conducts a systematic analysis on the Hughes' reinterpretation and enrichment for Marxism green productivity. In addition , it discusses the origin and performance features of green productivity and delves into the social principle,harmonious development principle and revolutionary principle of green productivity development, with an emphasis on Jonathan Hughes' core ideas regarding the need gratification,technological advance and ecological issues of green productivity. From there, it comes to reveal the theoretical development trend of green productivity and comments on Hughes' contributions and limitations in ecological Marxism. Eventually, this article is based on reality to further elaborate the enlightenment and reference brought by Hughes' green productivity development theory to China's green development and ecological civilization construction.Based on the above content, this thesis falls into five parts. Except the introduction part, the main content of other parts is introduced as follows: In the first chapter, the historical background of green productivity was described, and Hughes's re-interpretation of Marx's Theory of Green Productivity and his definition of its principle were illustrated and this trend was analyzed. In addition, the relationship between the development of ecological productivity and ecological environment was explored. In the second chapter, Jonathan Hughes's theories of green productivity and green production development were illustrated, and the revolutionary effect of Marx's production development theories and three elements forming the green productivity were analyzed. Besides, the development mode of green productivity was summarized, and finally, the role of productivity development, that is, revolutionary effect, was explored as one key point. In this part, the concepts and emergence conditions of the damage effect and motivating effect were respectively analyzed. In the third chapter, the true and false needs and the relationship between the satisfaction of needs and development of productive force were discussed. Moreover, the basic meaning of the concept of meeting this need is illustrated,and the comparative analysis of true need and false need was conducted. In this part, the focus of analysis was on the relationship between the satisfaction of need and green productivity, and the conclusions were drawn: (1) the satisfaction of need is the internal driving force of green productivity development; (2) the development of green productivity is the way of displaying the satisfaction of need. In the fourth chapter, Jonathan Hughes's theories of the development of green productivity were analyzed. From the perspective of theoretical contribution, Hughes's theories of the development of green productivity have played the explanatory and normative role on one hand and been the inheritance and harmonious development of ecological thought of Marx on the other hand. From the perspective of practical contribution,Hughes's theories of green productivity development are of great significance to the construction of ecological civilization in China.
