Research On The Method Of Documentary Characters Psychological Performance

The art of film and television is a kind of art style which uses various narrative and audio-visual means to describe the characters' psychological activities.Based on narratology and video technology,the art of film and television creates images in the moving videos and reproduces and reflects life through shots and sound.Documentary,as a kind of art of film and television,has always been used to record the living conditions of people in every age.Now that all the personal and social behaviors are inner reactions,the characterization of real images can not be separated from the description of characters' psychology.At present,on the one hand,the portrayal of c haracters' psychology has received little attention although there are many theoretical research and creative practice about documentary at home and abroad;on the other hand,it is critica l to portray characters' psychology through the description of inner thoughts and emotions for documentary creation.Therefore,this thesis mainly deals with the portrayal of c haracters' psychology in documentaries,with the aim to find out effective methods to portray characters' psychology.In the process of thesis writing,the author read some relevant theoretical works,watched the classic Chinese documentaries shot since the 1980 s and some classic foreign documentaries,and even shot two documentaries in person: the Most Beautiful Rural Doctor in Weishan Island and Xiaotang's Dream of Riding across China.With the theoretical research and practice,the author draws several conclusions as follows.Firstly,when using narratology in documentary,the arrangement of narrative structure can be used to show the change of characters ' psychology,and the development of narrative plot can also indicate the ups and downs of characters' psychology.Narrative details can enrich characters' inner world,and the choice of different narrative perspectives can show characters ' psychology from different levels.Secondly,in the process of documentary creation,it is better to use different kinds of lens when using picture to express characters' psychology.For example,long lens can show the complete change of characters' psychology,while when the depth of field is used,audiences can have different understanding to characters' psychology,thus leaving room for consideration.C lose-up sequence can highlight characters' psychology in a specific instant,thus its role cannot be neglected.The color and rhythm of the picture are also essential to the portrayal of characters' psychology,because different colors can directly reflect the psychology.In addition,a documentary can show the tension or tranquility of characters' psychology through different rhythms of picture.Thirdly,sound is another important element in audio-visual means.Synchronous sound,commentary,music,and acoustics are the frequent used vocal elements in documentary film.Synchronous sound can completely record the language of the characters,thus making the understanding of characters' psychology more convincing;the commentary can directly reveal the characters' thoughts;music and acoustics play a supporting role in the portrayal of characters' psychology.It still has a long way to go in the creation of documentary films,especially in the portrayal of characters' psychology which has been a difficult point in documentary creation.Through the writing of this thesis,the author has an in-depth understanding to the methods portraying characters' psychology.It is expected that the results of this study can provide some references for the future documentary creation,and enrich the creative methods,thus enhancing the expressive and infectious power of documentary films.
