Since Henri Holec has formally introduced the concept of "learner autonomy" in foreign language teaching in 1981,scholars have done a lot of research on autonomous learning.With the rise of the concept of lifelong education,language researchers have been also aware of the importance of cultivating students' autonomous learning ability,and establishing the goal of language teaching to cultivate learners' autonomous learning ability.The cultivation of students' autonomous learning ability has been reflected in different levels of various syllabuses and curriculum standards.With the rapid development of the international economy in recent years,the vocational education has been paid more attention to cultivate technical talents.But a common problem existing in the vocational students is that they are lack of the English self-learning ability.Based on the exposition of current research on autonomous learning and its main concepts according to literature review,this paper combines the constructivism learning theory,humanistic learning theory and social cognitive theory to carry out teaching experiment on the cultivation of English autonomous learning ability.Through the collection and analysis of experimental data,the paper is to answer the following two questions:1.Whether the cultivation of English autonomous learning ability can significantly improve the students' autonomous learning ability?2.Whether the cultivation of English autonomous learning ability can improve the students' English achievement?The author has done the one-term teaching experiment on the 81 students who came from class 2015 with the major of the new energy engineering in Municipal and Environmental Department,Shandong Urban Construction Vocational College.One of the classes is a pilot class,the other is as the compared class.The experimental tool includes a questionnaire and the front and rear test.Through the front test,the conclusion is that the students' English achievement in the pilot class and the compared class is basically the same before the experiment.In the course of teachingexperiment,the students in the pilot class received the training of cultivation of English autonomous learning ability.The students in the compared class only accepted the regular English teaching.Through the analysis of the questionnaire of the students in the pilot class,the subjects' self-learning consciousness and ability were highly enhanced after the half-year teaching experiment.And the subjects gave a positive attitude towards the experiment on the cultivation of English autonomous learning.Meanwhile,the rear test showed that the cultivation of English autonomous learning ability can improve the students' English achievement.
