The question about whether and how visual attention alters length perception has been long discussed.Researchers used different experimental paradigms respectively proposed that visual attention can increase, decrease or do not effect length perception. However, given that each paradigm has problems such as it can't allocate attention efficiently or it's attention allocation is not pour for their interaction with perception etc.No one can definitely say what's the right answer for this question.Besides, most studies only used a single attentional paradigm to do their research, thus raised the question whether their result is really caused by visual attention or is only caused by their specific paradigm. Thus,in this article,we used two different types of attentional paradigm to explore this question carefully. There are two researches and four experiments in our study. In research one,we used bilateral dot matrix motion paradigm to adjust visual attention.subjects were required to judge whether two bilateral visual fields presented lines have the same length.According this research,we reached the conclusion that visual attention can increase perceived line length. In research two,we used prism adaptation paradigm to adjust visual attention to turn left, turn right or turn neither. Then we used the post-test experimental designs, compared the performance difference between pretest and posttest in length perception task.We finally once again concluded that visual attention can increase perceived line length. In this study,we consistently certified that visual attention can increase perceived line length by using two distinct visual attention paradigms. Our conclusion has a better generalizability, because we had ruled out the possible influence of specific experimental paradigm by using more than one paradigm to do the research.Besides, our attention paradigms are more pure than many paradigms used in the past by other researchers, thus makes our conclusion more reliable. In conclusion,we had used distinct visual attention paradigms to certify that, visual attention can increase perceived line length, this also showed that, visual attention can alter appearance.
