With the continuing acceleration of the process of globalization, cultural integration has become an inevitable trend, meanwhile the advance of network technology also enables people to appreciate and understand the customs and cultural characteristics of different countries through different channels. The characteristics of films and TV dramas determine important value in intercultural communication, and the dramas of imperial court can make greater contribution to the dissemination of national culture.Legend of Zhen Huan, the Chinese royal harem drama, has received warm welcome due to its winding plot, the classic and grand costume, the elegant and complex court etiquette, the exquisite performance of the actors, and numerous Chinese cultural elements contained in the drama.Several years later after the hit of Legend of Zhen Huan, this drama was reproduced to land on the American mainstream video website, and has become the first Chinese TV drama officially broadcast in American mainstream media.Since this drama contains lots of Chinese elements, its spread has provided a platform for western audiences to get to know about Chinese cultural elements. However, actually the reproduced Legend of Zhen Huan(hereinafter referred to as the English version of Legend of Zhen Huan)receives a cool reception upon broadcasting, and media in China also have criticism of the English version of the drama after its broadcasting in Chinese local TV,and think that the quality of the English translation has affected the impression of watching. After the preliminary investigation, the author finds that the problems of the English version of Legend of Zhen Huan are mainly in the following three aspects: firstly, mistranslating the cultural images of the source text;secondly, omitting part of the cultural images of the source text;thirdly, completely missing all the cultural images of the source text, which is extremely detrimental to the spread of Chinese culture. After the analysis, the author finds that when translating these cultural elements, the translators use the translation strategy of domestication, which is extremely unfavorable to the spread of Chinese culture. Therefore, the author proposes that, the specific solutions should be taken: firstly, correcting the mistranslated cultural images of the source text;secondly, supplementing the partly-omitted cultural images of the source text;thirdly, restoring all the missing cultural images of the source text.Venuti' s resistant translation insists on resisting the target language culture, and transferring the source culture to the target text without reservation. In view of this, the author proposes that, the theory of resistant translation can be used as the guidance to solve the problems existing in the English subtitles of English version of Legend of Zhen Huan. The author puts forward that,in order to let Chinese cultural elements to be transferred to the English culture as much as possible, translators should adopt the translation strategy of foreignization,or the translation strategy of “foreignization first, domestication second” when translating these Chinese cultural elements.Translators should let western audiences approach the Chinese cultural elements, rather than letting Chinese cultural elements approach the western culture or western audiences. With the comparison and analysis as the research method, guided by the theory of resistant translation, this thesis takes numerous Chinese cultural elements in the official English subtitles in the English version of Legend of Zhen Huan as example, analyzes the Chinese cultural elements conveyed in them to study the problems existing in the international spreading of Chinese culture, and puts forward corresponding solutions, hoping to provide new reference for the translation of Chinese cultural elements.
