Marginalization,Splitting And Compromise:the Plight And Choice Of Intellectual Women In Alice Munro's Works

The plight and escape of intellectual women has been one of the themes involved in Munro's works.But so far,there are few monographs or papers paying attention to the intellectual women in the works of Munro,and less devoted to the study of the images of the intellectual women.Based on the new critique of "text reading" and the holistic grasping method,this paper mainly draws lessons from Virginia Woolf,Simon de Beauvoir,Kate Minette,Julia Kristeva,Elasne Showalter and other feminist critics'Feminist criticism theories and the cultural research theories of Foucault and Said,trying to explore the plight and the choice of the intellectual women in Munro's works.This paper is divided into four parts.The introduction introduces the life and creation of Munro as an intellectual woman,the research status of Munro's works at home and abroad,and the significance of this research method and topic.The first chapter analyzes the marginalized situation of intellectual women in Munro's works from the external space.The Patriarchal society has a long history of hating,alienating intellectual woman.In Munro's works,the intellectual women were also subjected to being alienated,marginalized,becoming an outsider who lack a sense of belonging,wandering around the edge of the male world and the traditional feminine world.The second chapter starts from the internal space,focusing on the gender identity confusion of intellectual woman in Munro's works.In the life of love,the subjective consciousness of women as intellectual women and the weak,obedient and passive"femininity" disciplined by the patriarchal society conflict with each other;In the face of marriage and the dilemma of art choices,they are teared by the demand of marriage and art.The third chapter analyzes the compromise of intellectual women in Munro's works.The intellectual women's pursuit of fleeing is often full of limitations.After the obstacles in the patriarchal society and the inner division and fragmentation of the intellectual women,they choose to return to the traditional family life,and often seek unreal transcendence and solace from books and art,and this compromise is a projection of the survival consciousness of Canadian nation.Munro's intellectual women share a common identity between the Canadian and the post-colonial peoples,both rebelling and identifying with the mainstream culture.As the outstanding contemporary Canadian author,Munro's intellectual women have enriched the types of intellectual women in the history of literature and truly reflect the difficult situation of Canadian intellectual women between 1920s,1930s and 1970s,1980s.
