A Study On Chia-ying Yeh's Poetics In View Of The New Criticism

Professor Chia-ying Yeh is a popular research specialist on classical Chinese poetry in China and all over the world.She absorbed the west modern literature theory creatively,based on the Chinese traditional literary theories,interpreted and criticized the classical Chinese poetry and formed the creative poetic system on the basis of new criticism theory.Based on the current situation of Chia-ying Yeh's theory of poetry,the author discusses how Chia-ying Yeh study classical Chinese poetry under the reference of western modern literature and critical tradition of traditional Chinese literature on the premise of macroscopic handling of the academic works in a perspective of new criticism.The author analyzes and summarizes Chia-ying Yeh's theory and practice which formed in the process of cross-cultural comparison and digs the reflection and advance to the criticism of traditional literature in the course of Chia-ying Yeh's academic thinking.In addition,the author summarizes the poetics which formed under the influence of new criticism and expounds Chia-ying Yeh's poetics which contributes a lot to Chinese classic poetics.Under the influence of the new criticism like “close reading”,“the theory of the literary tension ”and rhetoric,Ms.Chia-ying Yeh formed an interpretation system of poetry centered on “xingfagandongshuo” and excavated the specialities of poetry such as “exquisite beauty which refined internally and externally”,“the beauty of passive virtue” from the angle of differentiation of poetry and history.Therefore,the idea of poetics was formed like some comments on human beings or the world through the combination between sensibility and intellectuality.Hence,the traditional Chinese poetics developed rationally and logically.When Chia-ying Yeh referred to classical Chinese poetry,she stressed commentson human beings or the world and started from the elements like historical background,individual behaviorism,ideological character,good timing,geographical convenience and good human relations.She was skilled in exploring the personalities of the poets,ideological contents and artistic style and seeked the lingering charm of classical Chinese poetry from the perspective of “by the meaning against the will”.Similarly,Chia-ying Yeh investigated the root tracing of poetry,seeked the road of evolution and helped old people pass on the change.Apart from excavating the endless power of poetry,she provided referential experience for the creation of new poetry.Compared with the traditional poetics,the most outstanding feature of Chia-ying Yeh's poetics is to combine the criticism between Chinese and western literature.Chia-ying Yeh's poetics retained both contracted words in the traditional Chinese poetry and the theoretical analysis of western world.She combined the advantages of sense and theoretical analysis,made readers understand the poetry more easily,eliminated the disadvantages of traditional Chinese poetics and evaluated traditional Chinese poetry better and better.Chia-ying Yeh dedicated her life to the study of classical Chinese poetry.She made a comprehensive study and be a thorough master of classical Chinese poetry,traditional Chinese literary theory and western modern literature.Moreover,she brought out the splendor of classical Chinese poetry.On the one hand,she broke the barriers of Chinese and western poetics,on the other hand,she set a new course for ancient and modern poetics.Without doubt,all her studies provided the realistic possibilities for the development of poetics of the time.
