A Study On Culture Criticism Of Rey Chow

As a cultural critic,Rey Chow was born in Hong Kong which is a British Colony,but became famous overseas after receiving American academic education.Her post-colonial criticism takes 20 th century's Chinese culture as an important object.The starting point is in the East-West cultural collision of the historical climate,exploring the mainstream literary culture and popular literature culture,exploring the relationship between mainstream literary culture and popular literature culture.Rey Chow shows her excellent western academic theory basis and powerful academic style.Besides,she shows a new train of thought which few people have tried Her interpretion method beyond colonial dialogue makes her stand out among overseas Chinese.“visuality” and “originality” are Rey Chow's core theory of the interpration of Chinese modern literature,it is also the main methodology.She explains the connotation of those two concepts by understanding Chinese modern literature fully.First of all,Rey Chow points out that the understanding of “original” is based on discussion of “Chinese characteristic”,and the “original passion” means China's infatuation on “fundamental” and “ultimate source”.Trough out a particular angle from Chinese literary history,she also offers a unique interpretation of "Chinese characteristic".Rey Chow discovers the "original" not only by investigating the roots of the relevant literature class,but also researching it in combination with modern visual media of movie's “visuality”.Exploring Chinese modern literature from “visuality”,Rey Chow thinks that the core characteristic of Chinese modern literature is the combination of modernity and advanced technology by demonstrating the shocking effect brought by the visual media.Though her main object of study is Chinese modern literature,she doesn't focus on the general research to Chinese modern literature.On the other hand,she focus on the subjectival problems of Chinese modern literature.Except using “visuality” in the research from the beginning to the end,when she explores the Chinese subjectivity which has been affected by the Western world,she also pays attention to the “female” who is always been ignored.So the “female” becomes her sally port of the research.Through the research of the “female” in the Chinese literature,Rey Chow finds that those women figures are against for tradition strongly.Except for the research of Chinese Mainland modern literature,she focus on Hong kong,too.From the return of Hong Kong in 1997 to the uncertain future of Hong Kong,she builds up special subjectivity in Hong Kong,Chinese and England by interpreting Hong Kong' s popular culture selectively.In other words,Hong Kong is a “Third Space” which againsts for external colonial as well as againsts for nationalism.She even thinks that Hong Kong is the model of Chinese city life in the future.Rey Chow's research is filled with western culture theories,including Colonial criticism,feminism and psychanalisis,etc.She insists on using familiar western theories to analyzing and creating.Her purpose is to reject the confliction of western world and Chinese and make a cross-langue interpretion cultural in the conventional opppsites pattern in the First World and the Third World,using cultural translation.But as her growth and academic environment are so different,Rey Chow's research has an inevitable problem of ignoring the specific historical background and over interpreting with her paranoid ideology.Her avant-grade crticism theory caused a sensation in western theories and brings a new angle and viewpoint to domestic academia.And it is strange that her academic theories has great influence in western countries and also creats a new way to domestic academic world.It is strange that her academic theories has great influence on domestic academic world and been focused on.It is also the theories which are criticized by lots of scholar in China.Even though Rey Chow's avant-garde criticism theory comes from different ideological and academic traditions,it indeed creats a new way of understanding modern Chinese literature and culture.She embezzled and regrouped lots of western theories to interpret Chinese literature.It also can inspire revelant research in China.
