The Linguistic And Cultural Research On Geographical Names Of Tanwanand Fujian

Geographical names are special appellations for the certain social group in the certain region and also language symbols to refer to the geographical entities. Geographical name is the object of toponymy research, can also be studied from the perspective of language and culture.From the linguistic standpoint, the language and characters,which are the materials of the geographical names,can be regarded as the "surface structure" of geographical names, to analyze geographical names from the aspects of phonetics, vocabulary or grammar , can acquire a greater depth of understanding of the pronunciation, meaning, derivation,structure of geographical names. From the cultural standpoint,geographical names contain rich regional culture, which regarded as"deep structure" of geographical names.It is known that geographical names record rich historical and cultural information, through exploring the nomenclature,origin and change of the geographical names, can understand the historical and cultural features of a certain region in a certain period.This dissertation takes the geographical names in Fujian and Taiwan province as the research object, mainly explores the linguistic and cultural features of geographical names in Fujian and Taiwan province.The Fujian and Taiwan province were closely related in history, the two still use the same minnan dialect nowadays, which highlights the identity of language and culture, thus brings about the cultural consistency of geographical names between them. Due to the different geographical environment and historical development, Fujian and Taiwan province have their own characteristics on geographical names. This dissertation studies the linguistic and cultural features in geographical names between Fujian and Taiwan province, tries to reveal the same and different features in geographical names between them.It takes linguistic study as the focus,which includes three aspects: phonetics, vocabulary and grammar.In terms of phonetics, it mainly researches the syllable structure,preservation of old phonology, and homonymic state in geographical names between Fujian and Taiwan province. In terms of vocabulary, it explores naming methods of proper geographical names , analyzes the types ,features and differences of general geographical names between Fujian and Taiwan province,it also researches the derivation of geographical names. In terms of grammar,it analyzes the grammatical structure of geographical names in Fujian and Taiwan province, and also explores the grammatical features of minnan dialect through some special structure types in geographical names.From the macroscopic view, language is a part of culture, they are related to each other and cant be separated, thus this dissertation also involves cultural analysis of geographical names among linguistic study,so as to further explore the linguistic and cultural features of geographical names in Fujian and Taiwan province.
