With the acceleration of globalization, films, with their significant influence on society, are utilized as an important tool in the cultural communication between the countries, whose translation has also been brought to attention in the field of translation studies.Film translation, different from ordinary text translation,is deeply influenced by more extra-linguistic factors. In an attempt to include these factors and discuss the relationship between film translation and them,a polysystematic perspective is taken in this thesis.Polysystem theory believes that factors from different systems and translation do correlate in at least two aspects: translation selection and translation strategy.Guided by this point, the thesis will be carried out in the above two aspects. In this thesis, previous researches on AVT and film title translation at home are reviewed first, with their limitations pointed out.In addition, the fact that polysytem theroy has been seldom applied to film translation makes this thesis distinguished from previous studies.Based on the core concepts and general ideas of polysystem theory, with the application of a revised theory—Macro-Polysystem theory, the applicability of polysystem theory on the study of film translation is discussed further. In the thesis, the films translated by Shanghai Film Dubbing Studio from 1949 to 2016 are taken as the objects of the study on the selection norms.By dividing the 68 years into five periods and analyzing the distribution of source countries and regions, the relation between the influencing factors and the selection norms is discussed from a diachronic perspective, which has been rarely touched upon in previous studies.Furthermore,English film titles translated by Shanghai Film Dubbing Studio from 1949 to 2016 constitute the materials for a corpus-based study on the E-C film title translation strategy, which tries to figure out how film title translation is influenced by the position of translated films and different factors. This research approach differentiates itself from the traditional studies, such as discussion on specific translation methods and evaluation on the translated text, and provides a new perspective on this study. Finally, the influences from co-systems(politics,ideology,economy,linguistics/language)on film translation selection and film title translation as well as the features of norms are summarized, and the applicability of polysystem theory on the study of film translation is verified.
