| Film industry is of vital importance within the globalization of the international economy. With tremendous box office income of Chinese film market, which goes beyond 6 billion RMB in 2009 and adds up to 10 billion RMB in 2010, a large number of foreign movies are increasingly flooding into China. Meanwhile, many Chinese films have entered into the international market. Audiovisual translation, as Professor Qian Shaochang described that became "An Increasingly Important Field" So with the purpose of bridging the gap between communications of different countries, audiovisual translation is ever increasing in both quantity and quality. However, studies on the audiovisual translation are insufficient in the academic circle and lacking of theoretical frameworks, which is especially true in China. Therefore, both range and depth of audiovisual translation studies are under further development and exploration.This paper tries to discuss film translation from a new perspective, namely the Polysystem Theory. Based on this theory, this thesis aims to put audiovisual translation under the whole society background from the previous isolation studies and to find some relations between them. The theory was proposed by Israeli scholar Iamar Even Zohar as early as 1970s, who believes that Translation Studies should be put within a larger sociological background. Only in this way can we get a complete view of those translated works. From this perspective, after detailed research of Chinese audiovisual translation activities, the author have found that the development of film translation in China is influenced by its politics, society and culture, etc. and this influence is not only on translation method and theme but also the translator.On the one hand applying the Polysystem Theory to audiovisual translation proves the applicability of the Polysystem Theory; on the other hand, the paper tries to from a new perspective study audiovisual translation-a promising branch of translation studies.
