As a representative writer of the new realism literature,Fang Fang has been prolific since her first publication in 1982.Over the recent years, researches on her works have yielded fruitful results, especially in that female images in her works have been studied rather thoroughly, yet relevant studies on the male images have been far less.To make up for the lacking, this thesis is devoted to making an in-depth study of the male images in Fang's novels, offering a relatively detailed classification of the various male images,in the hope of helping deepen the interpretation of Fang's works.Based on close reading of the text, this thesis researches into and summarizes the male images in Fang's works.Supported by the feminist theories, efforts are made to dig into Fang's attitudes towards the males by analyzing the male images both in love and in marriage.Fang's reflections on males are all-round—whether their inferiority and weakness when in love or their betrayal and selfishness in marriage,Fang's writing of them reflects her observation and criticism of the male world as well as her exploration into the gender relationship.A further study of this helps reveal the cultural and value connotations of the male images in Fang's writing. The thesis consists of four chapters:The first chapter outlines the era background of the male images in Fang's novels,Fang's family and education background as well as her social experiences, which all made her pay attention to the lower class and to the male.In the second chapter, specific novels are combined to analyze the male images built by Fang. With an inductive method, the male images in love are classified into three categories: the weak male images, the selfish male images, and the persistent-in–love male images; Then the third chapter summarizes the male images in marriage, which includes: those that wander in helpless struggles, those that utilize women to get promotions and those that are lack of responsibilities.;Finally the fourth chapter concludes that in Fang's writing, through her depiction of the male images, she explores into the cultural connotations embedded inside.
