With the development of economic globalization and close communications between China and other countries, notary certificates have become more and more popular in recent years.According to international practice,Chinese citizens should offer relevant notary certificates if they want to have a further study, visit their relatives, settle down abroad, inherit property, fulfill labor contracts or carry on international trades in foreign countries etc. These foreign-related notary certificates should be issued by notary public offices and translated into English because most foreign organizations prefer to accept the English version. Therefore,it is urgent and important to make high-quality translation of notary certificates.Compared with general legal texts, notary certificates have their own features of words, sentences and texts. For example, the words in notary certificates are more precise, the sentences are short and concise and the texts are usually have stylized forms. So that the whole text of one notary certificate is more memorized and templated. With the guidance of Nida's functional equivalence theory, this thesis analyzes the language characteristics of notary certificates and reveals some problems in Chinese to English translation of notary certificates with case studies during the author's translating practice.Besides,it expounds how to translate headings, body part, close and the tense of the notary certificates. Finally, the author offers her strategies and suggestions for Chinese to English translation of notary certificates, and advocates that translators should learn from each other and improve their translating skills during their practice.
