A Report On Interpreting Practice For Commissioning Work On Chuandongbei Gas Project

As international exchanges are increasingly frequent,many Chinese and foreign enterprises have strengthened cooperation in various fields such as economy,culture,energy etc.Especially in energy field,a lot of Sino-foreign cooperative projects arise and develop.Therefore,thedemand for oil and gas interpretationhas been growing in recent years.Meanwhile,the professionalism of oil and gas interpreting puts forward high demands on interpreters.This practice report is based on the author's interpreting practice from July in 2015 to July in 2016 for Chuandongbei high sour gas project,analyzing the interpreter's main work of pre-interpreting,on-interpreting and post-interpreting in the project.Many scholars have made deep researches on the features of engineering interpreting.The related studies,however,on interpreter's physical and psychological adaptability in construction setting are insufficient.So this report makes further study on this area.First of all,this report briefly introduces the background information of Chuandongbei gas project and the interpreter's task assignment,which are inclusive of project overview,plant introduction,interpreting types and requirements.The place of practice is mainly on construction sites,where the consecutive interpreting is the major form.Next,the particularity of this working environment,including safety requirements of gas exploitation and regional characteristics of this project,makes high demands on interpreter's environmental adaptability.In this report,the author is dedicated to describing the process of interpreting and analyzing specific cases in order to resolve the difficulties encountered during project interpretation such as technical terms,accent distinction,environmental adaptability and so on by applying basic interpreting skills such as short-term memory,note-taking and non-verbal behavior etc.After completing the interpreting task,the authormakes summary and self-assessments on the basis of clients' comprehensive evaluation.At last,the author makes some conclusions at the end of this report.In the engineering project interpreting,interpreter should not only possess good bilingual competence of English and Chinese,adequate pre-interpreting preparation,strong psychological quality and good environmental adaptability,but also have the capacity to apply interpreting theories and skills into different working environment.In addition,monthly summarizing interpreting experience also plays a positive role in ensuring interpreting quality and improving capacity.
