On Cognitive Mechanism And C-E Translation Of Chinese Redundant Negation Construction�?? X_RNC�

"Construction" is the basic linguistic unit in construction grammar.As mental representation of linguistic system,it can generalize and store abstract schemas of human-being,constructing well-formed expressions in reality.In the realm of construction grammar,"coercion" is often used to resolve the semantic conflicts within constructions;"inheritance" is used to clarify the correlations of constructions.Nevertheless,insufficiencies remain in present studies,which rarely argue the interrelation of "coercion" and "inheritance" in terms of the process of construction combination.Chinese redundant negative construction(henceforth RNC)is a special phenomenon since it has affirmative meaning with negation markers,such as "?","?","?".A case of Chinese RNC,"??XRNC",has been gradually explicated in syntax,semantics and pragmatics.However,cognitive mechanism and C-E translation of "?? XRNC" are still to be further investigated by integrating"coercion" and "inheritance".Based upon construction coercion theory and multiple mode of inheritance presented by Goldberg,the thesis strives to elucidate the cognitive mechanism and C-E translation of "??XRNC" in an integrated model of"Interactive-Coercion-Inheritance",with a synthetically methodology of qualitative and quantitative paradigms.First,the limitations of coercion and inheritance are pointed out,and the theoretical framework of"Interactive-Coercion-Inheritance Model" is so built.Afterwards,syntactic,semantic,and pragmatic properties of "?? XRNC" are analyzed within the self-built closed corpus,then these typical characteristics are imported to the integrated model,with a view to lucubrate the cognitive mechanism.Finally,relying on the special form-meaning pairing,constructional principles for "?? XRNC" translation are postulated and accordingly translation strategies are proposed.In addition,the cognitive motivation for "?? XRNC" translation is explored.The research findings are as follows:(1)Goldberg's constructional coercion overemphasizes the predominant role of construction in solving the semantic conflict.Static multiple mode of inheritance cannot readily clarify the dynamic process of construction generation and neglect the correlations of construction and its lexical items.As a matter of fact,coercion and inheritance have a dialectical relationship.The integrated model has provided more complete explanatory power for the emergence of construction.Horizontally,the multidimensional conflicts within the lexical items can be resolved by"interactive coercion".Vertically,the multidimensional conflicts and accommodations between the construction and its lexical items can be resolved and clarified by "interactive-coercion-inheritance''.(2)There are 2045 items with "?? XRNC" in the corpus.At syntactic level,this construction not only performs as different syntactic constituents(44.69%)in a clause,namely,predicate,complement,adverbial and attributive,but also serves as a clause in a sentence(55.31%).And the lexical item "XRNC" can be represented by AP(84.74%),VP(12.96%),NP(2.30%).At semantic level,the distribution of parts of speech of "XRNC" to some extent has a great impact on the meaning of the host construction."?? XRNC" always reflects happy and joyful psychological activities,being used to depict lively scenes by the positive adjective,to comment some events,or to express humans' sadness through the negative adjective;"?? XRNC" reveals the language users'subjective attitudes toward some events by the psychological verb;"??XRNC" delivers language users' subjective comments or cognitions to some events by the abstract noun.At pragmatic level,"?? XRNC" can be regarded as a "subjective emphatic construction" with the pragmatic presupposition of"??? X".(3)More reasonable interpretations on the cognitive mechanism of "?? XRNC" are given within the skeleton of the"Interactive-Coercion-Inheritance Model".To start with,the properties are imported to the integrated model.Horizontally,multidimensional conflicts within the lexical items "?" "?" "XRNC" are resolved by "interactive coercion".Next,vertically,along with the "interactive coercion",multidimensional conflicts and accommodations between "??XRNC" and its lexical items are solved and clarified in light of"interactive-coercion-inheritance''.Then the construction emerges.Finally,some words in concrete contexts can be specified in "XRNC" by language users,so that the constructs of "??XRNC" are constructed.(4)According to the special form-meaning paring of "?? XRNC" translators could adopt two translation strategies to realize "??XRNC",namely,"constructional meaning correspondence" and "constructional form correspondence".The two translation strategies operated are motivated by prominent effect caused by"interactive-coercion-inheritance".In brief,the exploration of cognitive mechanism and C-E translation of"?? XRNCc" not merely expands the research categories of construction grammar,revises the limitations of related theories,but also provides a new perspective to study Chinese irregular constructions.Besides,the thesis has some implications in learning and teaching Chinese as a second language and in translator's subjectivity.
