The Chinese "Taiwan Daily News" (1905-1911) And Taiwan During The Japanese Occupation Period Drama

The new direction of research in Taiwanese dramas is based on the Japanese occupation of Taiwan.To study the history of Taiwanese dramas is absolutely related to the presses and periodicals.During the period of the occupation,it offered a variety of publications.Taiwan Daily News which was published on May 1 in 1898 was the one of the top important newspapers then.In addition,the supplement,Chinese Version of Taiwan Daily News which was published independently from July 1 in 1905 but latter was abolished November 30 in 1911,issued a lot of contents about culture,performances,information and related news about Taiwanese Dramas in seven years.Based on the information from Chinese Version of Taiwan Daily News,the historical contexts and analysis with charts led readers easily to have a look the development and changes of Taiwanese Dramas in the colonial period.This paper mainly includes four aspects derived from Chinese Version of Taiwan Daily News,and they are divided into four chapters:In chapter one,it showed the evolution of local Taiwanese Dramas from 3 main points: the rising commercial theater,the reasons of traditional dramas declining,and the development of female's theatrical troupes.Take the Tamsui Theater as an example,the performances in it presented the soul-stirring scenes,it not only analyzed the background reasons about declining of traditional drama but reflected in how intellectual elites criticized in aesthetics and different levels between different dramas.Within the chapter,it also had a discussion about how female's theatrical troupes rose and developed to make a comprehensive survey of Taiwanese Dramas in that period.In chapter two,it focused on how troupes from China performed in Taiwan,including reasons,situations,advertising,operations,specialty and social influence.In chapter three,it stated the comments of dramas from Chinese Version of Taiwan Daily News,and those are mainly inclusive of performances between actors,comparisons between troupes,developments between different dramas and etc.These showed that reality,mass involved,and well-advertising,and brought the impressive result,included the popularization,the social function,and improvements of dramas.In the chapter four,it was the antagonism between colonialism and ethos,it mainly divided into two parts;One is assimilation of drama types under the colonist,Japanese government tried to control and suppress people's thought.The other is how Taiwanese people rose ethos themselves.These analyzed the effects from culture sides,and mainly focused on how Taiwanese ethos activated.Chinese Version of Taiwan Daily News whose drama information were launched in Chinese was the biggest and the most persistent newspaper in Japanese Occupation,and it was the resource of this paper at the beginning.Besides,the relations between dramas and newspapers were observed in Chinese Version of Taiwan Daily News.The newspaper led not only the amateurs to be the professionals but also the success of newspapers industry.The newspaper under colonization,Chinese Version of Taiwan Daily News,reflected in the consciousness of classified society and helped people to well understand the works from that time.In conclusion,the paper set out from the context of Chinese Version of Taiwan Daily News.The result of the analysis showed the development in Taiwanese Dramas,and it needs to attach great importance to both research of Taiwanese Dreams and the historical periodicals in academia.
