The Domestication And Foreignization In Translating Sentimental Tommy

With the introduction of a large number of foreign children's literature,scholars are doing more and more researches on the translation of children's literature.A good translation can not only faithfully reproduce the content and form of the original text,but also convey the foreign culture to target readers.Sentimental Tommy(1896)is one of the representative works of the famous British writer James Barrie,who has received steady acclaim for his novels and plays,such as The Little Minister(1891)and Peter Pan(1904)besides the one discussed here.Barrie shows the tragedy of Tommy and criticizes backward thoughts of rural Scotland in this novel.This book is one of the most successful works for children that describe rural life in Scotland,Threefore it is of great significance to acquaint themselves with Scottish culture and thereby broaden their horizon.This report aims at exploring the strategies of domestication and foreignization in translating children's literature,based on case studies of the difficulties encountered in the translation as well analysis of the language features of the original text,.The report is divided into five chapters.Chapter One is a brief introduction to the project,including its background,significance and requirements.Chapter Two presents the stages of preparation before translation,translation process,and proofreading after translation.Chapter Three analyses the language features of the source text,culture-loaded words,readers' acceptability and original style.Chapter Four discusses different strategies used in translation,particularly the strategies of domestication and foreignization.Chapter Five summarizes the argument and presents the findings and lessons that have been gained in translating Sentimental Tommy.
