In the 1980 s,the studio system of Japanese film collapsed,it was not until the1990 s after a downturn that there were signs of some improvement, along with a number of independent production companies,as well as some emerging filmmakers such as Kitano Takeshi and Shunji Iwai. They kept innovating on the subject and form, and injecting individual features into a variety of film works. This marked an extraordinary “New Film Movement” in Japan.Tetsuya Nakashima,a member of this Movement, stood out from these new filmmakers due to a series of shooting habits and picture features he often developed as an advertising MV director.Tetsuya Nakashima's film works had the same fast-paced display as in his ads,and closely examined the design of scenes, the color and composition of pictures,as well as the modeling of characters. In addition,he was also good at incorporating CG animation, opera and other art styles into the works to produce a strong visual impact and gain the defamilarizedaesthetic effect.Magnificence is the distinctive label of his film. The strong sense of Rococo appearance was full of magnificent things, and the highly saturated color and the exquisite but exaggerated appearance added a special magic color to his film.He vigorously explored the techniques of expressing the created visual arts, and showcases more possibilities of employing all picture elements in highlighting the character image and emotional transmission to some extent. However, the magnificent appearance is wrapped with the cruel world.Under this camera, the roles will always move into a plot that is distorted or contrary to the real life, the selection of subject always follows the surreal story, and a grotesque art world is exhibited by preparing the unexpected plot.In this world, people are weird, paranoid, with imperfect performance in personality, the alienation or indifference from others makes them “displaced” as if they were lonely,so they become a different group in the real world. The unique subjects are interpreted in distorted, exaggerated or deformed manner, bringing the audiences a new perspective ofunderstanding and interpreting their life.Looking through the peculiar appearance, the essence of Nakashima's film posed a criticismagainst the inherent issues in modern Japanese society.Such criticism indicates the dissatisfaction with men and the society, which was expressed using variousunique techniques in the bright or dark images.Growth, violence, loneliness and sin were his preferred subjects, showing the concerns on the landscape of Japanese society in the context of cultural hybridizationand the common people who were struggling in the society.Assisted by the aesthetic, gorgeous techniques,Nakajima depicted the disharmonious, abnormal weird world, and revealed the indifference, violence, discrimination, selfishness and other disgraceful issues. The “ugly” things were expressed using “aesthetic” techniques to show a strong contrast between the appearance and essence of his works, forming the unique aesthetic experience and effect of “the flower of evilness”.For a “new filmmaker” almost at his sixty,it is indeed very hard for Tetsuya Nakashima to stick to his bold innovation and earn the recognition of audiences. His ability to strike a good balance between meeting the market needs and sticking to his own ideas is the essential skills that the contemporary filmmakers should demonstrate. The ideological implication in his film will be discovered through induction,so as to gain a better understanding of his artistic and aesthetics pursuit. And more orientations of research and consideration will be put forward for further studies on Tetsuya Nakashima.
