Application Of Principles Of Metaphors Translation In Translating Chinese Farmer's Proverbs Into English

Farmer's proverbs are the essence and summary of agricultural civilization,and there are a number of metaphors including in Chinese farmer's proverbs.These metaphors are not only means of rhetoric and expression,but also a mode of thinking used by people to know this world.Thus,it is of great importance for the study of metaphors within farmer 's proverbs.Translating Chinese farmer's proverbs into English has a vital function in spreading Chinese culture,but these metaphors are barriers which cannot be ignored during translating.It has been a long time for western academia to study metaphor and people have been always focusing on it.Western metaphor study can be traced back to over two thousand years ago.The Conceptual Metaphor,put forward by Lakoff and Johnson in Metaphors We Live By in 1980,marks the study of cognitive metaphor developed in a comprehensive and thorough way,causing an upsurge of research on metaphor in the west.The attention to metaphor study starts comparatively late in our country,which has become the focus in academic circles in recent years.At that time,the metaphor study gradually combined with translation theories,and some scholars also put forward some strategies to translate metaphors.However,those strategies are not sufficient and cannot guide the translation of metaphors in Chinese farmer's proverbs directly.This paper presents the research history and status of metaphors in Chinese and western academic circles and analyzes the features farmer 's proverbs at the same time,based on which two principles to translate metaphors of Chinese farmer's proverbs into English are put forward.Firstly,the translator uses common sentence patterns of English proverbs in terms of language structure.Secondly,the translator should maintain features of metaphorical object and its cultural connotations.The two principles are applied in translating metaphors of specific Chinese farmer's proverbs into English and some specific translation methods are summarized.Meanwhile,this paper analyzes the translation of 800 Sentences of Farmer's Proverbs,which is not only a specific application of two above-mentioned principles,but also an examination and correction of the two principles.
