Based on theories of cognitive linguistics and taking idioms with “chi(blood)” in Japanese as research object,this research was conducted to investigate the semantic extension of idioms with “chi(blood)”.Five chapters are involved in this thesis.The first chapter is prolegomenon which mainly presents the object,purpose,methodology and significance of this research.Then previous studies on Japanese idioms and their deficiencies are analyzed.Theoretical basis applied in this research is introduced at chapter two.Chapter three introduced the process of data collection and arrangement.Based on the theory of metaphor and metonymy in cognitive linguistics,chapter four investigated the semantic extension of idioms with “chi(blood)”.Chapter five is conclusion which summarizes the result of this research and put forward future research topics.Conclusion can be made by this research:One,According to part of speech,idioms with “chi(blood)” can be divided into nominal idiom,verbal idiom and adjective idiom.Verbal idioms include “ga”case verbal idiom,“wo”case verbal idiom and “other”case verbal idiom.Two,the definition of “chi(blood)” in dictionaries can be divided into three sorts: blood,blood relationship,human kindness or vitality.“Blood” is the basic meaning of “chi(blood)” while “blood relationship” and “human kindness or vitality” are derived meaning in abstract domain.Three,When idiom with “chi(blood)” is used to express idiomatic meanings,its semantic extension can be accomplished by the cognitive style of metaphor,metonymy or metaphor with metonymy.In there,“ga”case verbal idiom,“wo”case verbal idiom and adjective idiom are all accomplishing their semantic extension by metonymy.Four,There are “blood relationship”,“change of mood and emotion”,“fight or kill”,“human kindness”,“efforts to pay”,“digestion and absorption of food or knowledge and experience”.The examples of “blood relationship” are the most.When idioms with “chi(blood)” is used to describe “blood relationship”,the semantic extension can be accomplished by “cause—effect” metonymy.Five,Except for the idiomatic meanings of “human kindness” and “efforts to pay”,“chi ga ka yo u” and “chi no de ru you” can also be used to describe “blood relationship” and “change of mood and emotion” respectively.
