A Report On The English Translation Of Hunan Fireworks (Excerpts)

This report studies the C-E translation of regional-culture texts.The original text is excerpted from Hunan Fireworks.It introduces Hunan fireworks comprehensively and systematically from its long history,arduous course of development and fireworks culture with unique characteristics.The translation of Hunan Fireworks,to some degree,contributes to the introduction and publicity of Hunan fireworks culture,and helps English readers to gain some knowledge of Hunan fireworks.Furthermore,it may helps to improve Hunan fireworks' influence in the world and promote the sales of Hunan fireworks overseas.The author selects the seventh chapter from Hunan Fireworks as the translation material.The difficult points of the translation material lie in the translation of words and expressions with national cultural characteristics and of sentences with Chinese rhetoric,and ancient Chinese poems.The translation of that practice is guided by the translation theory Translation as Adaptation and Selection,in accordance with the principle of “multi-dimensional adaptation and adaptive selection”,which involves adaptive transformation from the linguistic dimension(linguistic form),cultural dimension(bilingual cultural connotation)and communicative dimension(bilingual communicative intention).This report is divided into four parts.The first part is the description of the translation task,which mainly introduces the background and significance of the translation project,the introduction and analysis of the original text.The second part is the description of the translation process,including pre-translation preparation process,translation process and correction process.The third part is the case analysis of translation.Under the guidance of the theory of Translation as Adaptation and Selection,the author translates words and expressions with national cultural characteristics by using adaptive transformation from the cultural dimension,sentences with Chinese rhetoric by using adaptive transformation from the linguistic dimension and ancient Chinese poems by using adaptive transformation from the communicative dimension.In the fourth part,the author summarizes the feelings and experiences in the translation practice,the problems to be solved and the future direction in which to exert still greater efforts.
