Characters satiation refers to the phenomenon that the machining efficiency of the word and its related information reduced when the specific characters are processed repeatedly or for a long time. This phenomenon has been found in a variety of text materials' experiments, however, the essence of how it happens is debatable and mainly forms the following four theoretical explanations: orthographic satiation, the satiation of association between orthographic and semantic, semantic satiation and the combination of multiple satiation methods. That is to say, researchers proposed respectively that the satiation may occur in orthographic processing, the period of the association's processing which means the channel between orthographic and semantic during words' identify, semantic processing and integration of mutilevel. In order to check the validity of the assumption that multiple satiation methods may work simultaneously, the researcher conducted two experiments in all with the method of Event-related Potential. The first experiment used Korean words for experimental material, monitored the degree of activation evoked by orthographic processing through N170 and reflected the situation of pure orthographic processing;the second experiment adopted ancient characters for experimental material, monitored the extent of activation induced by orthographic processing through N170 and semantic processing through N400 separately and inspected semantic and orthographic processing at the same time. Both two experiments were performed within-subjects using 2repeatability(repetition,baseline)× 2matching(yes,no)× 6repetitive levels(6 segments)experimental design, matching was set up for meeting the need of speeded repetitive orthography-matching task.Independent variable is the level of repetition which appears as segment and dependent variables are the difference value of response time DRT,accuracy DACC and ERP components' average amplitude DAM between repetition condition R and baseline B.In experiment 1,results showed that: with the increasing of repetitive level,DRTs had no significant difference, both DACC2 and DACC4 were lower than other segments and differences were statistically significant, the DAM4 of N170 component was the largest among six segments and statistically significant. In a word, the time course of Korean characters' orthographic satiation was inverted U shape and reached peak at the fourth segment. In experiment 2,results showed that: along with the increasing of repetitive level,DRTs had no significant difference, both DACC2 and DACC4 were lower than other segments and differences were statistically significant, there were differences among DAM2 and others of N170,DAMs of N400 had no significant difference. In brief, the time course of ancient characters' orthographic satiation was inverted U shape and reached peak at the second segment, peak of semantic satiation in ancient characters was not detected. In summary, this study found that:(1)the path of characters' orthographic satiation was inverted U-shaped;(2)as to the peak of orthographic satiation, ancient characters reached early, namely familiarity influences the saturated peak sooner or later, familiar words attain the top point quickly.
