Research On The Satiation Of Chinese Characters Between Native Chinese Speakers And Non-native Chinese Speakers

In daily life,after long time fixating at a character or word,repetitively write a character or a word,repeat a character or a word aloud,people are going to have a feeling of uncertainty of the character or the word,and they even suspect the accuracy of its spelling.Such phenomenon is "Chinese character satiation".There are mainly three kinds of hypotheses for the essence of Chinese character satiation.The first hypothesis is that " semantic satiation",and people who hold this hypothesis believe that "language satiation occurs at the semantic processing.The second hypothesis is "the attenuation of perceptual processing",and also was referred as "orthographic satiation".The third hypothesis is referred as "the satiation of linked channel of orthographic and semantic",and people who hold this hypothesis believe that language satiation occurs at the associative level between perceptual representation and semantic.In order to figure out the essence of Chinese character satiation,this study adopted three kinds of Chinese character as experimental materials,which are Chinese character with similar orthography and related semantic,Chinese characters with similar orthography and unrelated semantics,Chinese characters with dissimilar orthography and related semantics,referring to the experimental paradigm of Tian & Huber(2010),designing category membership task with high degree repetition and low degree repetition for Chinese character,employing native Chinese speakers and non-native Chinese speakers as participants.Experimental results show that under the condition of using single Chinese character with multi components as experimental materials,native Chinese speakers showed a stable satiation effect in semantic processing,but did not show satiation effect in the orthography processing,and the satiation effect of native Chinese speakers is a kind of "semantic satiation";the satiation of Chinese character isn’t unique to native speakers,and the satiation of Chinese characters can also occur in foreign students whose Chinese as proficient as Chinese speakers.Like native Chinese speakers,bilinguals who use Chinese as a second language also experience semantic satiation when they process Chinese characters.
