The stage at which the satiation effect occurs is still debated. Therefore, there is no final conclusion on the nature of character satiation. In this study, the direction of Chinese character recognition is discussed to explore the occurrence and stage of character satiation.Experiment 1 was performed within-subjects using 2(Chinese character frequency:high frequency, low frequency)× 2(semantic transparency:transparent, opaque)experimental design.Combining the lexical-decision tasks of Cheng and Lan(2011)and the data analysis method of Tongwen(2015),Four independent conditions were formed by the difference between the repeated conditions and the baseline conditions.Single-factor repeated measurement analysis of variance(anova)was conducted for each condition and multiple comparisons were made afterwards.Experimental results found that four conditions have taken place in the character satiation phenomenon, compared to other conditions,Semantic opaque of low-frequency words are more likely to achieve satiation effects and is relatively stable, semantic opaque of low-frequency words saturation effect significantly faster than semantic opaque high-frequency words. However, there are difference between the reaction time and the correct rate of semantic transparent low-frequency words and semantic transparent high-frequency words.Guessing may be caused by a speed-accuracy trade-off,which led to the introduction of Experiment 2.Experiment 2 was performed within-subjects using 2(Chinese character frequency:high frequency, low frequency)× 2(Phonetic regularity:regularity, irregularities)experimental design. The experimental analysis method is the same as experiment 1.The results show that the satiation of irregular low frequency words and irregular high frequency words occurs significantly faster than that of irregular high frequency words. There was no satiation between low frequency and high frequency speech rules,so there was no significant difference between them.Combining the results of two experiments,it is shown that the character satiation phenomenon is not caused by the orthographic decomposithion, nor is it caused by semantic satiation, but by the glyph semantic connection satiation.
