The spatial turn in culture study appears in the late 20 th century,which emphasizes on the rediscovery of space.Space is closely connected with people's life.Compared to time,scholars start to pay much more attention to space,which expands the concept of space.Physical space and social space are two facets of space rich with abstract meaning and culture significance.V.S.Naipaul is a Nobel Prize Laureate who is acclaimed as an autobiography writer of post-colonial literature.He enjoys immense fame in the English world as one of the three excellent writers in England Immigration Literature.Among all his other works,A House for Mr.Biswas is most noted for his father's experience,and it demonstrates destiny of the colonized people through depictions of Mr.Biswas' struggle to climb social ladders in order to get rid of his identity crisis.This thesis is conducted from the facet of spatial theory which aims to analyze the relationship between space and identity crisis for Mr.Biswas,so as to reveal narrative value of the relationship in this novel.This dissertation comprises five parts:Introduction is a comprehensive literature review and the theoretical framework for my argument;Chapter one provides a study of the employment of space theory which provides theoretical support for analyzing the relationship between space and identity crisis from the angle of personal space.Analysis of the relationship between space and identity crisis is the main focus of Chapter two;Chapter three addresses the value of space through physical space,spiritual space,and Mr.Biswas' approaches to deal with his own identity crisis.In conclusion,research values of this paper are summarized.
