In the second half of the twentieth Century of English literary world,there is such a prominent post-colonial writer.He is Vidya Da Souley Prasad Napaul(Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul,1932-)who is an Indian British writer.A House for Mr.Biswas which was published in 1961 is the early representative of V.S.Naipaul and is often called the masterpiece of V.S.Naipaul.This is a representative of his memory about his life in Trinidad.The significance of Naipaul's writings for literary research is not only in his uniqueness,but also his typicality which reflects the most of writers' existence and writing state in our era.Since entering the Twenty-first Century,more and more domestic scholars have paid attention to cultural geography.As a branch of human geography cultural geography mainly studies the combination of cultural phenomena in space.Furthermore,if apply it to the study of literature,it can achieve a comprehensive effect of combining writers' research with their works,and geographical research with literary research.Starting from a relatively new perspective,therefore,this paper tries to interpret this novel from the perspective of cultural geography that selects the parts of A House for Mr.Biswas and analyzes them in detail.There is specific analysis from these three aspects: the natural landscapes Mr.Biswas lived in the period of childhood and the cultural landscapes of Trinidad and Port of Spain;the cultural phenomena of India and Trinidad in different space;languages and place names contained in this novel.Furthermore to some extent,it will reflect Mr.Biswas' s pursuit of his own house,his pursuit of self-independence and also his pursuit of self-worth and self-rights.It will provide a more profound understanding of the Indian traditional culture and the colonial people's life in Trinidad.Under the impact of globalization at the end of the colonial era in 1960 s,the colonial people in Trinidad,as well as Mr.Biswas,endeavor to pursue the independence of their own national culture and to get their independent living place.It hopes that through the interpretation of the typical examples of this novel A House for Mr.Biswas with the application of the theory of cultural geography,and it can broaden the view of the studies of Naipaul's works.At the same time,it is beneficial forgeographers to pay attention to literature and encourage literary researchers to broaden their horizons so that they can decode some classics from point view of place,landscape,space and etc.,which enrich readers and academics' the understanding of this novel and the concept of cultural geography.
