Intentionality Analysis Of Folk Adages' Translation Context In Hong Lou Meng

Hong Lou Meng is a masterpiece of Chinese culture,whichis of great literature value.Itis also a pearl in the Chinese and world literature.It is a great piece of literature with huge structure,various characters,encompassing all kinds of content.In addition to the accurate and vividlanguage,other styles,like poem,word,song,couplet,allegorical sayings,etc.,all fully reflected the custom,culture and history.Among them,folk adages are rich in vivid language and with strong national cultural characteristics.Therefore,they are the essences of language.The folk adages studied in this thesis are the most difficult and tricky part among the whole book sincethey relate to different values,religious beliefs and aesthetic interestsbetween the East and the West.Therefore,it is difficult for the translator to translate out practical meanings of folk adages.Although Yang Xianyi couple as well as Hawkes and his son-in law translated folk adages in Hong Lou Meng vividly and excellently,they didn't provide a feasible translation strategy.Intentionality has provided many new perspectives for a variety of research fields since its production.Especially the intentionality analysis has provided a new perspective and operational method for the research of translation context.Language has greatly enriched the human mind.The development of mind is closely related to the use of language symbols.Translation is also a linguisticphenomenon.Philosophy of mind is closely linked to language cognition.Therefore,translation activity,as a method of linguistic performance,also has close intrinsic relationship with mind philosophy.Intentionality is the key content of contemporary mind philosophy research.It puts translation phenomenon in the huge network of history and culture as well as the small background of knowledge which permeates in every process of translation.What's more,it brings great significance to the study of literature translation since it guides researchers' attention from “source language center” to “target language center”.Therefore,it promotes the integrity and unification of the whole translation process.The thesis takes Searle's intentionality as the frame and refersto Yang and Hawkes' two versions to explore constraints and performance of intentional states,meaning intention and intentional background on folk adages' translation context.It probes into the concrete embodiments of intentionality context on the understanding and expression of folk adages' translation context;and it makes a comparison between Yang and Hawkes in dealing with each intention;then it analyzes the main reasons for their differences;and finally it comes up with translation strategies and procedures of folk adages based on intentionality context.This thesis is mainly divided into five chapters.The first chapter contains the literature review of intentionality,intentionality and translation context as well as folk adages' translation in Hong Lou Meng,whichprovides a clear understanding of the topic discussed in this thesis.The second chapter is a general introduction to the folk adages in Hong Lou Meng,including its definition,main source and semantic meanings.The third chapter explains the role of intentionality context in the process of translation.The fourth chapter is the top priority,which analyzes the manifestation of intentional main bodies,intentional states,meaning intentions and intentional background in the process of translation and then it analyzes the intentionality differences of folk adages in the two versions and the reason for the differences.The fifth chapter puts forward strategies and procedures of folk adages' translation through context of intentionality.The translation analysis of folk adages based on context of intentionality provides a new perspective and a feasible method for translation study.However,because of limited knowledge and capability of the author of this thesis,it needs more experts and scholars to make deeper studies on this aspect.
