Research On Li Yu Zheng Shi And The Folk Adages Recorded In It

Li Yu Zheng Shi is a note-style dictionary compiled by Tang Xunfang,a litterateur in the Qing Dynasty.The dictionary is a collection of 1135 folk adages taken down by the author during his reading.Studies on folk adages in the dictionary can help comprehend the features of the words back then.Meanwhile,based on the examples from different times,one can explore the historical development of a folk adage,therefore further understanding its origin and semantic progression.Although a lot of work has been done on the collection,record,and semantic study,due to the limitation of the age and the author's competence,there still remain many problems in the phonetic notation and definition of the folk adages in the dictionary.The thesis,taking the folk adages in the dictionary as a breakthrough point,tries to make a critical appraisement on the merits and shortcomings of the dictionary during the exploration into the source and development of the folk adages.The innovative point of the thesis lies in that it selects some wrong explanations of the folk adages in the dictionary based on verification and points out their flaws and shortcomings.The thesis presents the drawbacks of the dictionary while exploring its value of language research,in hope of providing reference for other researchers.The thesis consists of three parts.The first part is a brief introduction to the reasons for topic selection,and significance of the study,the literature review on the current research on the dictionary,and the research methods in this thesis.The second part is the main section of the thesis,which is composed of three chapters.Chapter 1 mainly introduces a biographical note on Tang Xunfang and the basic information of Collection of Folk Adages including its stylistic rules and layout,contents and what the dictionary aims for.In Chapter 2,some issues deserving dialectical deliberation about Collection of Folk Adages are discussed,including the pronunciation and form of Chinese characters and the problems in the dictionary's compilation style.Chapter 3 analyzes the exegetical value of the dictionary in terms of the study of dialects,the compilation of the dictionary and the research on folk culture.The last part of the thesis includes conclusion and references.
