In the first half of the nineteenth Century,Protestant missionaries who came to China in the early years established English newspapers in china,introducing the contents about natural scenery,political and economic systems,the development of agriculture,trade characteristics,humanity architecture,historical figures,classical writings and social customs in China.The articles contains a large number of Chinese cultural loaded words that reflect the social situation and customs of china.They are not only the important medium and the core information for westerners to understand Chinese customs,but also reflect the level of communication between Chinese and Western cultures.During this period,the Chinese cultural loaded words in the missionary English newspapers reflected the Chinese images in the eyes of westerners,But the academic circles had did in-depth research only for the Chinese Repository,while some other English newspapers published in China at the same time was neglected.The study of Chinese cultural loaded words in historical English newspapers is rarer.According to the investigation of the presentation and classification of the Chinese cultural loaded words published in the English newspapers of the first half of the nineteenth Century,the strategies of pragmatic communication and its characteristics are analyzed,and to develop a descriptive and exploratory study.In order to adapt to the needs of the target readers and the cultural differences between different cultures,the missionaries has formed a set of pragmatic strategies in the translation and dissemination of reports of Chinese culture loaded words,reflected in the translation strategy,the subject matter and communication skills.At the level of sentence structure,discourse and cross-culture communication,there are some characteristics of pragmatic communication.Based on this,there are four chapters to analyze according to the theory of journalism,pragmatics and translation.The first chapter is the introduction,which briefly introduces the significance and background of the topic,literature review,research methods and innovative ideas.The second chapter elaborates the cultural loaded words of China in English newspapers of the nineteenth Century.Firstly,defining the core concepts,and then explaining the three kinds of forms of cultural loaded words of China included in the English newspapers,and make the classification for the cultural loaded words of China.In the third chapter is to analyze the pragmatic strategies of cultural loaded words of China in the newspapers.It mainly focuses on three aspects: At the skill level of translation,making the strategy of combining domestication and foreignization,,and the integrated use of phonetic notation,literal translation and free translation method etc.The stories are with diverse types,and because of its specific tendency and preference,the stories are both similar and complementary.As for the communication skills,missionaries combined "appealing to authority","the authors' comments" and "supplementing the background information" and other reporting skills.The fourth chapter is to discuss the characteristics of cultural loaded words of China,according to the typical cases in the newspapers,exploring the attitude and value orientation of the cultural loaded words of China from the lexical level,and analyzing the arrangement of sentence information structure and the use of pragmatic presupposition and pragmatic vagueness from the discourse level.Finally,combining the Chinese and English newspapers founded by the missionaries in the same time,comparing the Chinese and Western cultures from the cross-culture perspective,discussing how the missionaries made dynamic adaptation according to the different target audience,linguistic and cultural characteristics,as well as the pragmatic failure in intercultural communication.
