Information,Symbol And Mythology A Study Of Chinese-english Translation Of Kunming Museum Relic Texts From The Perspective Of Linguistic Landscape Functions

Relic texts,as media language,are of great use for museum recipients.With the deepening of reform and opening up,the number of foreign tourists coming to China is steadily on the increase.Thus,relic texts translation is more and more important.Focusing on museum relic texts translation,this thesis attempts to answer several questions based on linguistic landscape theory(1)How does linguistic landscape theory explain relic texts translation by checking its interpretation of information,symbols and cultural myth?(2)What are the attitudes of tourists from home and abroad towards the language use in the linguistic landscape of Kunming Museum by carrying out questionnaires?(3)By carrying out field investigation,what are the problems and inadequacies in its translation according to the linguistic landscape standards?(4)Is it necessary to use English? What kind of role does English,as a world language,play in the linguistic landscape?On the basis of a wide range of literature research,this thesis firstly reviews previous researches on museum relic texts translation and linguistic landscape.Then,it discusses definitions and functions of linguistic landscape plus with two kinds of relationships,i.e.linguistic landscape and museum relic texts;linguistic landscape and translation of museum relic texts.Moreover,method of field investigation and questionnaires are adopted in this thesis.Based on results and analysis of field investigation and questionnaires,the thesis summarizes some relic texts translation errors in Kunming Museum and attitudes of tourists.Next,it analyzes those translation errors with the perspective of linguistic landscape functions.Additionally,it discusses international status and significance of English in museum.The final research results demonstrate that,firstly,linguistic landscape is applicable for relic texts and its translation.Linguistic landscape shares both difference and similarity with museum relic texts;Secondly,through field investigation series of translation problems are found in Kunming Museum.Thirdly,a majority of tourists think it is urgent to improve quality of translation in museum.Last,English,as a global language,plays a significant role in linguistic landscape of the whole world under the background of globalization.It is indispensable in museums.
