A Report On The Translation Of Classical Chinese Expressions In Museum Texts From The Perspective Of Context Theory

Museum is not only an important stage for displaying local history and culture,but also an important platform for international cultural exchanges.The various and colorful collection introduction,the text materials of various exhibitions and the news related to the museum are all important parts of the museum texts.The translation of museum texts plays a great role on the stage of international communication.Museum texts contain many language styles and include related professional information.So the translation of museum texts has always been a difficulty.But as China is accelerating the pace of openness,the translation of museum texts has become increasingly important.The author was fortunate to have participated in the translation practice task of Shanxi Museum with several students from October 2018 to November 2019,involving the English translation of exhibition texts and news releases.In the process of translation,the author encountered various problems,the most prominent of which was the translation of classical Chinese expressions in the titles of the exhibition and classics quotes.Under the guidance of his mentor,the author uses context theory to analyze and solve this problem.Since the emergence of context theory at the end of the 19 th century,through the continuous development and improvement of many scholars,it has become an important part of the field of language research and has also played a huge role in guiding translation studies.After reviewing related research,the author first reviews the related researches of museum texts by scholars at home and abroad.Then based on the introduction of context theory,the paper analyzes the linguistic characteristics of the museum texts,starting from the three types of context,namely the linguistic context,the situational context,and the cultural context.The author analyzes problems of English translation of classical Chinese expressions in the titles of the exhibition and the classics quotes,and gets the best translation.At last,the author tries to summarize the corresponding translation solutions to these problems,in order to provide reference for the translation of similar museum texts.
