A Study On The English Translation Of TCM Utilizing Translation Distance

With the enhancement of cultural communications among countries,traditional Chinese medicines(TCM),as a part of traditional Chinese culture grasped this chance and are growing stronger steadily.The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for Tu Youyou and the cupping marks on back of Michael Phelps approved a fact that TCM is being recognized by more foreigners.All these facts will undoubtedly highlight the translation with particular importance.This translation practice report selected the eighth section of Fotosay · Huangdi Neijing – life cultivation with the diet as its source text,aiming at promoting traditional Chinese culture and making knowledge of traditional Chinese culture benefit the public.Translation involves several types of distance,including cultural distance,historical distance,social distance,text distance,aesthetic distance,format distance and other derived categories.This translation practice selected cultural distance and text distance as its research targets and applied strategies of domestication and foreignization to the translation text.This translation practice report classifies translation distances according to its characteristics into types firstly,indicating the shortest is not always the best.Only an appropriate distance will be able to provide the best translation.Secondly,with the precondition of realizing the best translation distance,this translation practice report discussed applications of domestication and foreignization strategies in TCM translation.And finally a conclusion of this translation practice is provided,which approves the English translation of TCM is accessible by utilizing translation distance under the guidance of domestication and foreignization.
