A Report On The Interpreting Task Of TedxXiguan 2016 Annual Conference In Guangzhou

This report endeavors to illustrate the importance of Pragmatics,especially discourse markers in interpreting task.Pragmatics has been in the center of translation research since its establishment.Scholars keep studying it in translation field such as literature translation,law translation,science translation and non-literature translation.Most scholars concentrate on the integration of pragmatics and translation.However,from the author's perspective,much more attention shall be paid to the application of pragmatics in interpreting which actually is more closely linked to it.During the last summer vacation,the author was given the chance to be a simultaneous interpreter for TEDxXiguan 2016 Annual Conference in Guangzhou LN Garden Hotel.The event was held in form of lectures.The conference theme was “Constructive Disruption”.In this conference,professionals from different walks came to share their good ideas and ingenious ways to do things.The organizing committee endeavored to provide novelties for local community.And TEDxXiguan wanted to make a difference by sharing good ideasThe author's task was to interpret for speakers who were giving speeches on the stage.The organizing committee recruited another five interpreters via CS translation.The author paired with his classmate Michael Mu who recommended the author to organizers.Interpreters were divided into three groups which enabled organizers to assign each group with different speakers.In present report,the author endeavors to illustrate the important function of pragmatics in interpreting process,especially on discourse markers.Based on Relevance Theory,Shift of Perspective,Contextual adaptation,the author analyzes the essence of problems he had encountered.In addition,the author depicts the theoretical basis of different tactics applied in the task.Furthermore,the author provides some advice which may be helpful to people who are about to undertake interpreting.
