Analysis Of Interpreter's Roles In Consecutive Interpreting

The development of globalization contributes to frequent exchanges among countries and facilitates communication among people.In varied interpreting occasions,interpreters are vital to guarantee that the communication goes smoothly.As one of popular interpreting forms,consecutive interpreting is widely applied in different cross-cultural occasions such as lecture,speech,training,and press conference.In consecutive interpreting,the interpreter assists the speaker to deliver his/her opinion and intention,during which the interpreter plays a crucial role in promoting the communication.This report,based on author's interpreting service for IBM Corporate Service Corps program,aims to analyze three roles the interpreter plays in consecutive interpreting.This report includes task background description,task preparation process,task description and case analyses.After reviewing the record of this interpreting service,the author explores three roles---gatekeeper,conversation co-constructor and communication coordinator---that an interpreter should play in consecutive interpreting.The author hopes that based on this consecutive interpreting service,this report could offer enlightenment to interpreting practitioners so that they can do their part in facilitate the communication.
