This translation report is a Chinese to English translation report whose source text is excepted from the second part of the book-Folk Science and Technology of Jingpo in Dehong, written by Qin Ying.In this part, the author mainly introduces Jingpo’s dietary practices and the specific cooking methods. The rice is the staple food;all kinds of meat and vegetables are non-staple food.Such a diet reflects Jingpo’s cognition on natural resources and its technology and ability of food transformation, and creates Jinpo’s rich diet custom as well. The original text belongs to technical writings.Based on the characteristics of the original text at lexical level, syntactic level and discourse level,in the process of translation, the translator is guided by the functional equivalence theory proposed by Eugene Nida,a famous American linguist and translator. The theory emphasizes that translation is not only to pursue the rigid correspondence at the level of literal meaning, but to achieve functional equivalence between the two languages,so that the target reader’s response to the translated text is equivalent with the source reader’s response to the original text.In order to meet the above requirements, the translator adopts specific translation strategies in the process of translation in order to achieve the maximum degree of functional equivalence between the source text and the target text. For example:(1)For terminologies, the translator uses the Latin names. For culture-loaded words, the translator mainly adopts transliteration with annotation and free translation with annotation;(2)For the translation of local sayings, literal translation and free translation are adopted. For the translation of long sentences, the translator adopts the following translation strategies: conversion of the voices, linear translation, adverse translation, combination and restructuring;(3)Chinese is featured by parataxis, while English by hypotaxis. In technical texts,Chinese and English differ from each other at discourse level.Based on the different characteristics of Chinese and English technical writing at discourse level, the translator also adopts amplification and omission.
