This article is an English-Chinese translation practice report on the excerpts from the book No Animal Food and Nutrition and Diet with Vegetable Recipes.The book is intended to tell us the importance and significance of non-animal food and the author elaborates on three aspects from the urgency of the subject,physical considerations and moral considerations on this subject respectively.The book is a kind of social science text,which not only popularizes scientific knowledge to readers,but also has the characteristics of literariness and interest.The translation practice report mainly consists of four chapters.The first chapter is the description of translation project,which covers three parts: translation background,preparation for translation and translation process.The second chapter is source text analysis,which is mainly described from the perspective of brief introduction and language features.The third chapter is the introduction to functional equivalence theory and its guiding role,including an overview of functional equivalence theory and the guiding role of functional equivalence theory in informative texts.The fourth chapter is the most important one of this report,which is based on the case analysis of functional equivalence theory.The translator has analyzed the Chinese translation of social science texts under the guidance of functional equivalence theory from three aspects: lexical equivalence,syntactical equivalence and textual equivalence.This chapter analyzes and summarizes the difficulties and solutions encountered by the translator in translation practice,and Nida’s functional equivalence theory is applied to translation practice on the basis of the comprehension of the source text.In terms of lexical equivalence,the translator mainly adopts literal translation,free translation and conversion.At the level of syntactic equivalence,the translator takes some methods,including change of voice,reversion and division.In the aspect of textual equivalence,some techniques are also used by the translator like addition and readjustment,so as to make the translation more accurate and smooth and enhance its readability.Guided by Nida’s functional equivalence theory,the translator has made an in-depth analysis of the problems encountered in translation in order to summarize the corresponding translation methods and skills.At the same time,the translator also hopes that the translation practice report can provide some reference for relevanttranslation practice. |
