The Application Of Semantic And Communicative Approaches In Translation Of Academic Works

Along with the deepening of integration,China has attached increasing importance to international academic communication.The translation of academic works is necessary,which requires accuracy of the translated text.Although progress has been made on the study of translation of academic works,translators lack interdisciplinary thinking,hence complete system of translation of academic works has not been formed.As a result,efforts should be strengthened to the study of translation of academic works.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark's semantic and communicative translation,the report is completed after the translation of the second chapter of the academic work—Discourse,Communication and Tourism.The translator analyzed and solved some problems in the process of translation.In the language aspect,there are problems like morphological changes of English verbs,passive sentences translation and the translation of long and complex sentences.In addition,problems also exist in content comprehension,for instance,the translation of abstract words,phrases and jargons,lack of background knowledge,linguistic differences between east and west.Considering the characteristics of the translation of academic works,the translator combined the semantic and communicative translation approaches,and resolved the languages issues by applying the translation skills of amplification,repetition,conversion,inversion,division,etc.Moreover,attention was also paid to the context of the source text to obtain the appropriate meanings of abstract words,phrases and jargons.Based on some background knowledge of the text,the translator recreated the original text to get a smooth and reasonable translation.As a consequence,this translation practice indicates that the application of semantic and communicative approaches in academic works can accurately retain the original intention of the author,obey the language habits of the target language readers,and improve the ability of translating academic works.
