Along with the development of market economy and the acceleration of urbanization in China, the problem related to condemnation became increasingly evident. The dispute arising from condemnation has become both a major and popular topic in legislative and judicial practices.Relevant judgments are a channel through which the public may acquire a sound understanding of such cases.Genre as well as the mood and modality analyses of the judgments involving condemnation can help readers understand how the writers of these judgments employ language to express the attitudes of the law and the country towards private property and the degree of protection.Based on a genre analysis of twenty judgments involving condemnation in China and the U.S.,the present paper describes the linguistic features of the judgments and the effect they achieve.Furthermore, after exploring the moves and structures, the study identifies obligatory and optional elements and presents the sequence and recursion of these elements. In addition, the linguistic strategies of some moves are analyzed from the perspective of mood and modality, which is a complementary part to genre analysis. The paper conducts a detailed research and analysis about this genre at the macro level of genre analysis and the micro level of linguistic strategies.
